Tiny Little Joys via the “New York Times” and the Merlin App

This NYT article about finding new obsessions, or "tiny little joys" as they call them, was as if they looked into my phone apps and saw what I open every day and is giving me joy right now. I've been using the FREE Merlin app to identify birds during my daily walks, and it's become this unexpected source of delight.

Last week, sitting outside a Staples, I heard six (!) different bird songs and two were from birds that were new to me!

The article talks about how noticing small moments of happiness can actually rewire our brains. Using Merlin app has become one of my versions of this practice, where I get to slow down, listen, and learn about the nature all around me.

As someone who helps leaders navigate high-stress environments, I'm constantly reminded that peak performance requires these moments of pause and presence.

The most successful coaching clients I work with have rituals that ground them — whether it's morning bird identification, noticing architecture on walks, or simply appreciating good coffee.

These aren't "nice to have" practices. They're essential for sustained leadership and decision-making clarity.

What small joy surprised you this week?
